What trustworthiness looks like from the outside
Ask a regulated business how much its customers trust it and you'll get a survey score. Ask it what to fix and the room goes quiet. Trackers and Net Promoter Scores measure a sentiment after the fact. They don't tell you which interaction lost it, or what to change on Monday morning. Under the Financial Conduct Authority's Consumer Duty the question has moved from "did you follow the rules?" to "did the customer end up better off?", and a sentiment score is no answer to that.
Trust isn't a feeling, it's a pattern of decisions. Customers build it interaction by interaction, out of things they can actually see, so we started from their side of the glass rather than the organisation's. That gave us two instruments instead of one. Four dimensions describe what an organisation is: integrity, reliability, competence and benevolence. Seven signals describe what a customer experiences. The signals are the symptoms; the dimensions are the diagnosis.

Seven signals, each with a state that can be read, diagnosed and designed for: Clarity, Honesty, Reliability, Fairness, Care, Friction and Consistency.
Friction is the one that surprises people. It's the only signal that runs in both directions. Too much and customers give up. Too little and they feel unprotected, which is why a confirmation step before a large transfer reads as care rather than obstruction. The FCA treats friction as a legitimate design tool, and knowing when to add it matters as much as knowing when to take it away.
Because the signals are read from the outside, scoring them needs nobody's permission. Walked journeys, pricing pages, app-store reviews, published complaints data. It's all there.
The Signal Scan comes first: here is where you look untrustworthy to someone standing outside your business. Where that converts to an engagement, the Trust Scoreboard goes deeper into the four dimensions and turns the findings into a ranked list of fixes, least effort and highest impact first.
